# Lisbon and Surroundings

## Discover Lisbon with the locals

###### .

When you get to know Lisbon, you will notice that it is a city of legends and mysteries... It is said that **Lisbon** began to rise thousands of years ago, when Ulysses, the mythical hero of **Homer's Odyssey** , arrived by ship at a immense plain inhabited only by the goddess who fell in love with the traveller. When **Odysseus** left, the goddess ran out to sea in serpent form to find her love. When he couldn't find it, he died of grief and turned to stone, thus forming the **Seven Hills of Lisbon** . Lisbon is a journey through history about love, saints and churches.

#### Chiado

**3 minutes walk** The Chiado area is, nowadays, a large commercial area as well as all kinds of street entertainment. Here you can find hotels, theatres, libraries, museums, restaurants and the place where famous Portuguese people meet.

#### Carmo Convent

**3 minutes walk** This Gothic monument, or what remains of it, was founded by Nuno Alvares Pereira, the commander who became a member of the Carmelite Order. Construction was completed in 1423 and is, to this day, the largest church in Lisbon.

#### Rossio Station

**2 minutes walk** Built in 1886/87, the station was recently renovated: look at the ceiling and be dazzled. From the station platforms, which are about 30 meters above the main entrance, trains depart for the charming region of Sintra.

#### Rossio

**5 minutes walk** Rossio square is one of the most beautiful in Lisbon. People who pass it every day, rushing to work, rarely notice the beauty around them. Rossio is more than the beauty of its monuments and fountains, or its fascinating history.

**5 minutes walk** Shops, hotels, theaters… Here you will find everything and more! This is Avenida da Liberdade, synonymous with elegance, style and movement… A lively vein that links the Marquês de Pombal to downtown Lisbon.

#### Elevador da Glória

**6 minutes on foot.** Elevador da Glória is one of the few remaining elevators in Lisbon and is located in the center, in Praça dos Restauradores, connecting this square and Bairro Alto, in a journey of 265 meters.

#### Praça do Comércio

**7 minutes on foot** It's easy to describe Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, in just one word: WOW! This is one of the most majestic squares in Lisbon where it was once the main maritime entrance to the city.

#### Alfama

**8 minutes walk** Rebuilt by the local population after the 1755 earthquake, Alfama ran the risk of being demolished, which fortunately did not happen since this area of the city was considered a book of living history, where the past mixes with the present….

#### Castelo de São Jorge

**30 minutes walk** The citadel of Castelo de S. Jorge is a fascinating place to contemplate Lisbon's long history. The site was occupied by the Romans, Visigoths and Moors, before being transformed into the Royal Palace in the 14th century.

#### Bairro Alto

**5 minutes walk** Bairro Alto is Lisbon's nightlife hub which, believe it or not, was once almost the private property of a single man. It was once an elegant neighborhood, inhabited mainly by aristocrats and social climbers.
